Maybe it's not surprising that their last name includes the word "joy". That's all I could feel while spending time with Velma and Delvin Joyce during this month's podcast. The love and laughter ran through our conversation, but the candor and the underlying seriousness of the task at hand--to raise a strong man--was ever present. I'm not sure that words can convey the positive energy and the radiant love that flowed during our conversation, but I will tell you that every mother hopes to have a son that turns out like Delvin and every son hopes to have a mother that respects him as a grown man, but still understands that he is--and always will be--her baby.

Was Delvin just born lucky? Was he born into a lucky household of two caring parents and an older sister where everyone got along and worked for the overall Joyce household? Delvin and Velma make it clear that it wasn't always easy, but that they put their faith firmly in God's plan for each of them and their family and faced each day grateful for the work set before them. It is by His grace that I am able to launch this podcast today on St. Patrick's Day because Velma and Delvin have got it exactly right--strong mother-son relationships and strong families aren't based on luck, they are based on love and love takes work. Delvin cites Velma as the person who taught him how to work and how to work with gratitude.
What a special pair this duo is and just my luck that I was able to capture them in their joy so that their friends and family today and in the future can be a witness to the power of God's love shining through the unique bond of mother-son. Watch or listen to the recording.
